Another thing about 27.5" being very close to 26", is that they are easy to get moving from a standstill. That's the biggest knock against 29" IMO, as well as tough in tight switchbacks As far as 29" gearing, I converted mine to "ghetto 2X10" by removing big ring and replacing with bash, and swapping stock middle ring with 30T.

I get the rollover benefits of the 29er, shorter chain stay of the 27.5 and best of all, fewer buzzes on my arse when over the rear wheel. There's a few potential sizing factors for 27.5 vs 29. One is inseam and buzzing the rear tire. I'm a 6'5" former bmx rider and occasionally will tuck the bike enough on jumps to buzz my butt (not a real problem though). The buzzing becomes a problem when you can't avoid it and that's partially due to inseam and maybe due to technique.
